The Outbound Route : Borrioleigh to Devils Bit car park 9km
The Return Route : Devils Bit Car Park to Borrioleigh 9km (partly through forest)
Head out Templemore Road from BorrisoleighBurkes Castle will be visible on right hand side
At first junction on left , on templemore road, take a left , then an immediate right
Continue up this road until you read next junction, then head straight
At the next junction , take a right You will be heading towards Killoskehan
There are many friendly locals in this area
As you walk up this road you will pass Killoskehan Castle on the LEFT
At the next junction.. walk striaght ahead
Follow this road , the next cross roads is called Mattie Shepherds cross.
There used to be a shop located in the limestone building on this corner , owned by the Shepherds

As you approach the New school in Barnane on yhou left.. the remnants of BARNANE CASTLE can be seen in the distance on the LEFT
Immediate after Barnane New school located on the LEFT built 1958, is the entrance to the Barnane OLD Cemetery
Barnane Old Cemetery is located in the middle of the field, and here you will find the graves of the CARDENs who were the land owners for most of the land in the area . The lands were known locally as “Carden’s Wild Domain”

At the next junction , take a LEFT onto the road sign posted Devils BitJust Beyond this junction is the OLD BARNANE School
Just beyond this school is the old Barnane National School
It was established in 1846 by Carden to educate the children of his tennant farmers

Before the OLD SCHOOL, turn to the LEFT toward the Devils Bit
Keep on the road and proceed straight at next junction
This road becomes fairly straight and is know locally as THE LINE
On the RIGHT side you will see

Continue down this road, at the end head up the hill towards the Car Park
This will be the toughest part of the walk with a sharp incline
You will eventually come to the Devils Bit Car Park
There is bench here to rest at

One can leave the climbing for another day and head back on the loop back to Borris

Just off the car park , you will see an entrance to the forest south of it.
Walk through this entrance and continue on the forest road

The forest road can get a little mucky
At the next junction in the forest road , turn LEFT
Continue straight at the next junction
As you exit the forest the road straightens with excellent views on a clear day over the county on the RIGHT

Proceed straight along this tarmac road
At the next junction , take a LEFT
At nexst junction , take a right and head back towards Borrisoleigh
Keep right and head straight at the next junction
At the next junction head straight ahead
Head straight through the next junction
Keep LEFT at the next junction
At the next Junction veer LEFT until you meet the main road, then follow sign back into Borrisoleigh
